Pat’s background is in nursing. She qualified as a mental health nurse in 1994 and a general nurse in 1996. Over the years, Pat has specialised in safeguarding, interface between patient safety and safeguarding, dementia care and clinical leadership. She is also a lecturer in nursing and an author. Pat has worked extensively in a variety of care settings and her career has taken her through many roles, from direct patient care as a nurse, to working as a clinical manager, then workforce development and education. She now supports organisations to implement robust systems and processes relating to safeguarding at all levels from governance through to frontline. Pat has always had a keen interest in safeguarding and developed her first course relating to this in 2007. This was delivered to a range of care settings within private and voluntary organisations. She moved into the healthcare sector in 2014, to support the implementation of the Care Act focusing mainly on adults, before moving into all age safeguarding where she continues to work and she specialises mainly at governance and strategic levels. She has recently started expanding her knowledge and experience to encompass safeguarding at an international level and is currently undertaking research into how different countries perceive and implement safeguarding within a 'Think family' context.
Pat’s journey in dementia commenced in 1994, when she started working within older people services and she went on to present at an international conference in dementia care. She has published a book about dementia. She continues working within the specialism and is currently writing a second book relating to dementia care with a focus on health inequalities and safeguarding.
Pat also works as an expert witness in nursing, safeguarding, dementia, MCA/DoLS and complex cases.
Mark's background is as a social worker within Adult Mental Health, Community, Fostering, Childcare and Older Person Services. He is the lead researcher, and undertakes independent consultancy roles in social care issues. He has 24 years varied experience working within Older Persons services, Physical Disabilities, Children and Families and Adult Mental Health. He has worked as an Approved Mental Health Professional.
Mark has also worked within an acute hospital setting and his expertise is around the interface between health and social care and mitigating the social care issues and needs of complex cases, particularly where patients are sectioned under the mental health act within acute settings.
Mark has extensive theoretical and practical experience and knowledge in relation to the above specialties. He undertakes a range of independent social work services relating to adults and children with social care needs, which includes mental health, safeguarding, dementia care and complex needs. The consultancy aims to deliver services which are independent of any statutory, voluntary and public bodies. He also undertakes complex systematic reviews and research in social care issues.
Mark specialises in complex Mental Health Act and Care Act assessments.
