PMH Academy - Executive Coaching

Executive Coaching for Directors of Nursing, Registered Managers and Care Executives

Leadership in health and social care can be isolating. The weight of organisational responsibility and the constant demands of operational leadership leave many senior leaders with very little space to think. PMH provides confidential executive coaching for directors of nursing, registered managers and care executives - an independent space to think strategically, navigate complexity and lead sustainable organisational improvement.

Why executive coaching matters

Leadership Without Reflection Becomes Reactive

Senior leaders in health and social care make decisions that shape the direction, culture and effectiveness of entire organisations. They are responsible for governance, workforce development, service quality, regulatory compliance and strategic change - often simultaneously. Yet many have very little opportunity for structured reflection on the decisions they are making and the leadership they are providing.

Without protected space to think, leaders default to reactive decision-making. Strategic priorities are displaced by operational demands. Difficult conversations are delayed. Governance responsibilities become procedural rather than purposeful. Change initiatives are launched without the leadership confidence to sustain them. The result is organisations where leadership energy is consumed by crisis management rather than directed toward meaningful improvement.

PMH Executive Coaching provides experienced leaders with an independent, confidential space to think strategically, reflect honestly and develop the leadership confidence required to navigate the most complex organisational challenges. It does not offer advice. It develops the leader's own capacity for clearer thinking, stronger judgement and more purposeful action.

Coaching themes

Developing the Leadership That Organisations Need

PMH Executive Coaching addresses six core dimensions of leadership - each grounded in PMH's consultancy experience and organisational understanding, and each designed to strengthen the quality and confidence of leadership across health and social care.

Faculty Perspective

"Senior leaders in health and social care carry extraordinary responsibility, often with very little independent support. Coaching provides the space to think clearly, to challenge your own assumptions and to develop the strategic confidence that your organisation needs from you."

Coaching philosophy

Five Principles That Guide PMH Coaching

PMH Executive Coaching is grounded in five principles - developed through years of working alongside senior leaders navigating the most demanding challenges in health and social care.

01

Reflect Before Reacting

The most effective leaders create space between stimulus and response. PMH coaching develops the discipline of structured reflection - ensuring decisions are considered, proportionate and aligned with strategic purpose rather than driven by urgency, assumption or organisational pressure.

02

Lead with Purpose

Purposeful leadership provides direction, coherence and confidence to entire organisations. Coaching supports leaders in articulating and sustaining a clear sense of purpose - ensuring that day-to-day decisions, communications and behaviours are consistently aligned with the outcomes they are trying to achieve.

03

Evidence Before Assumption

Many leadership decisions are based on inherited assumptions, organisational habits or untested beliefs. PMH coaching develops the discipline of evidence-based leadership - building the confidence to challenge assumptions, seek reliable information and make decisions grounded in what is genuinely known.

04

Build Leadership Confidence

Confidence is not the same as certainty. PMH coaching develops the leadership confidence to act decisively in ambiguous situations, to have difficult conversations with clarity and respect, and to maintain composure when facing sustained pressure or scrutiny.

05

Create Sustainable Change

Organisational improvement that depends on a single leader's energy will not endure. Coaching develops the capacity to design and lead change that is embedded in governance, culture and workforce capability - creating improvement that sustains beyond any individual's tenure.

"The most effective leaders are not those who have all the answers. They are those who create the conditions where the right questions get asked and acted upon."

Who coaching supports

Directors of Nursing

Executive coaching for Directors of Nursing

The move from senior clinician to board member changes what is asked of you, often with little preparation and fewer people to talk to.

  • Holding board-level pressure alongside professional accountability
  • Making the transition from clinical leadership to executive leadership
  • Protected, independent space in a role that can be isolating

Registered Managers

Executive coaching for Registered Managers and care home managers

Registered Managers carry personal regulatory accountability for their service, and many of the best leave the role because of the strain.

  • Leading confidently under CQC scrutiny
  • Recognising and responding to the early signs of burnout
  • Helping organisations retain good managers

Chief Executives and Directors

Executive coaching for Chief Executives and directors

The most senior leaders often have the least opportunity to think aloud with someone who has no stake in the outcome.

  • Leading through sustained organisational pressure
  • Strengthening governance and board relationships
  • An independent sounding board to counter strategic isolation

Coaching is also available for Executive Directors, clinical and operational leaders, and senior professionals preparing for their first executive role. Your coaches are Pat and Mark Hobson, part of PMH's 60 years of combined practice leading wards and safeguarding teams - read more about PMH.

What to expect

How the coaching works

Every engagement is shaped around the leader, not a fixed programme. The cost depends on the number of sessions and format, and is confirmed in a written proposal after an initial conversation.

01

Format

Confidential, one-to-one coaching with a PMH senior consultant, delivered face to face or through secure virtual sessions.

02

Engagement shape

An initial conversation to agree your objectives, followed by a series of sessions at intervals that suit your role, with a review at the end of the engagement.

03

Confidentiality

What you discuss stays between you and your coach. Where an organisation commissions coaching, only broad development objectives are shared, and only with your agreement. The one exception is where there is a risk of serious harm to you or others.
